What is the crypto world?
A market that never closes.
“He's in crypto.” “Crypto crashed again.” You've heard it a hundred times. Here is what the crypto world actually does, who is in it, and whether the money made there is legal.
What do people in crypto actually do?
The crypto world is first of all a market: people buy and sell digital assets, and prices move 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Most of the activity falls into four groups:
- Trading: buying bitcoin or Ethereum with USDT on an exchange. This is what most people do.
- Holding: buying and leaving it for years, known as HODLing.
- On-chain activity: using wallets and decentralised apps, claiming airdrops.
- Earn and loans: depositing coins for interest or borrowing against them.
Who trades crypto?
| Group | What they do | What beginners should know |
|---|---|---|
| Retail investors | Trade and hold | You'll most likely be one of them |
| Exchanges | Match trades, charge fees | Pick a large one; keep money in your own account |
| Projects | Issue tokens, build apps | Most new tokens end up far below launch price |
| Miners and validators | Run the networks | Little to do with most people |
| Institutions | Funds, listed companies, ETFs | Increasingly move bitcoin's price |
| Influencers and “mentors” | Content, signals, courses | Be very careful with paid signals |
Crypto used to be for geeks; now it is office workers, students, stock traders and parents. More people means more scammers. Remember that on day one.
How do people make money in crypto?
| Way | Where the money comes from | Cost and risk |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term holding | The asset goes up | You must sit through 70–80% drawdowns |
| Trading (spot, futures) | Price differences | Most people lose to fees and emotions; futures can liquidate you |
| Working in the industry | Salary, project income | Needs skills and a compliant employer |
| Recruiting, signals, courses | Other people's money | This is how scams make money. Don't. |
The one gain you can be sure of is lower costs. The same trades with 20% lower fees add up over the years.

Is crypto legal?
It depends on where you live:
- Many countries (the US, EU, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong and others) allow crypto trading through licensed or registered platforms.
- Mainland China treats crypto business as an illegal financial activity under Notice No. 42 (February 2026); personal investment is not protected by law and losses are your own.
- Some countries ban it outright or restrict banks from dealing with it.
This is a summary of public rules, not legal advice. Check your local laws.
Are crypto profits legal? Is crypto gambling?
- Your own money, your own account, ordinary trading: legal where crypto is allowed, and usually taxable. Where it isn't, disputes aren't protected and cashing out can freeze your bank account.
- Money made moving funds for others or buying “cheap USDT”: very likely criminal proceeds.
- Money made from signals, courses or recruiting: may count as fraud or a pyramid scheme.
As for gambling: buying and holding looks like a high-risk investment; high-leverage futures and all-in bets behave exactly like gambling. How you play decides what it is.
