Do you need a foreign bank account to get into crypto?

Usually not. What you need is an exchange account. On OKX you trade digital assets priced in USDT, and your balance is digital assets, not a bank deposit.

The “get an offshore card first” advice usually comes from two places:

  • People selling card services: paid “help” opening foreign or virtual cards, which may break rules and may be used for other purposes;
  • People trying to get around currency controls: which carries more risk than buying crypto itself.

Never buy, borrow or rent a bank card to get into crypto, and never lend yours to “move funds”. If a card is used for criminal money, the cardholder is held responsible.

You don't need to buy dollars first, and USDT is not a way around currency rules. Where currency controls apply (mainland China, for example), using USDT to move money abroad can be illegal.

Do you need ID to buy bitcoin?

On any major exchange, yes. OKX requires identity verification (KYC) before deposits and trading: your own valid ID plus a face check.

  • Only your own ID: borrowed or bought verification can get the account frozen and pull you into someone else's case;
  • Be wary of “no ID needed” offers: private sellers, tiny platforms and chat groups usually mean no protection at all;
  • Enter real details for ID expiry and country of residence.

Why are crypto exchanges based offshore?

From 2017, mainland China shut down crypto exchanges and token sales, so exchanges that started there moved abroad. Large platforms like OKX now operate through entities outside China and hold different licences in different countries.

Whether you can use one depends on your local laws and the platform's user agreement. Never register with false location details, and don't believe that “an offshore card makes it compliant”.

This is a summary of public rules, not legal advice.
